Remembering Sgt. Nicole Gee, USMC, 23

Charity Of The Month September 7th, 2021

On August 20th, Gee wrote, “I love my job” on social media. Friends and family take solace in knowing exactly that: she died doing what she loved. Her job in Afghanistan was to support and communicate with Afghan women and children and to escort refugees to C-17s awaiting departure.

Gee, a Roseville, California native, was a graduate of Oakmont High School in 2016. In 2017, she left for boot camp. A platoon mate, Jenni La Torra, recalls how Gee helped her during a period self-doubt following an injury. Says La Torra, “(Nicole) pulled me in, hugged me, and told me not to give up […] She always put others before her.” Gee was then stationed at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, in the U.S. Marines’ Female Engagement Team with the Combat Logistics Battalion 24. She was promoted to sergeant just weeks prior to the blast that killed her and 12 other American military members.

Infantry Marine, Rowdy Woods, stated of Gee, “She always had a positive attitude and strived to put a smile on everyone’s face […] Nicole loved what she was doing out here and she knew the risks.”

Gee’s sister, Misty Fuoco, states, “She was such a bright light to everyone […] Always focusing on positivity and motivating others to do their best.” In a recent message to her sister, Gee mentioned how excited she was about everything that was accomplished in Afghanistan.

23-year old Nicole had recently celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary with her husband, Jarod Gee, another Marine. “They had a bond like nothing I’ve ever seen and I’m so devastated that he has lost the love of his life. She was everything to Jarod, the bright sun to his life,” Gee’s sister Misty Fuoco wrote.

“Her job in Afghanistan was to support and communicate with Afghan women and children and escort refugees to C-17s awaiting departure.”
